Victoria Falls Devils Pool and Livingstone Island Tour

Victoria Falls Devils Pool and Livingstone Island Tour

The Devils Swimming Pool and Livingstone Island Tour is an Exhilarating and Memorable Experience. This activity is only available from the Zambian side of Victoria Falls.

Livingstone Island was opened in 1992 to provide exclusive and unique picnics on the edge of the Victoria Falls. It is a protected area, that is only allowed a maximum of 24 people on at any one time. The utmost care is taken to protect and preserve the natural habitat of the area. There is only one company that has been issued with an exclusive operator’s licence to conduct the Livingstone Island and Devils swimming pool tours.

Please note that there are several off-the-street guides who offer tourists the opportunity to do this activity, but these guides are not licensed and we would strongly advise against going with one of them. Accidents have occurred with these guys which have led to bad publicity

At one stage we were very reluctant to recommend the Devils Swim as we felt is was quite dangerous, but having done the Livingstone Island Tour and the devils swim on numerous occasions now, we have had a change of heart. It is an awesome once in a lifetime experience and the operation is extremely well managed and run, with safety being a high priority.

When the water level of the Zambezi is too high, the island is completely closed, so neither the “Island Tour” or the “Devils Swim” are open (see below). As the water level drops, the “Island Tour” opens but the water is still too high to swim in the Pools. As the water level drops even further, first the “Angel Pool” then the “Devil Pool” opens allowing both the “Island tour” and the “Devils Swim” to be done. This happens in reverse when the river is rising.

The activities remain the same price regardless of whether both activities are done or not. You can do the Island Tour and it is not compulsory to Swim in the Devils Pool, it is a personal choice.

Livingstone Island

The Livingstone Island tour is seasonal and can only be done when the water level of the Zambezi River is low enough to allow safe access to Livingstone Island.
This is from approximately
late June to early March.

Angel Pool

Approximately mid-July to late August and early January through till mid-February.

Devils Pool

The Devils swimming Pool is available for an even shorter period as the water level has to be really low to allow for safe swimming.
Although variable every year this is normally from
 late August to early January.

The Name

As the name suggests this is the island from which David Livingstone first witnessed the Falls in November 1855. From here he lowered a length of calico with a bullet attached as a weight to measure the depth of the Falls.

The Experience

Five trips are offered throughout the day (details below) each trip lasting about 1.5 to 2 hrs. If you are coming from Zimbabwe, you will need to make your own way to the Kingdom Hotel for the transfer to Zambia. Please note that there is a border crossing involved and you need to make sure that you have the proper visa’s.

After the border crossing, you are taken to the departure or meeting place which is the Livingstone Island launch site, where you will meet your guides and be given an introduction of what to expect, as well as a safety talk.

From there a five minute boat ride speeds you through the current of the Zambezi River, twisting and turning as the captain navigates his way through the rocky channels, this in itself is an exhilarating experience as you head towards the rising column of spray from the Victoria Falls.

Once on the sandy and rocky island, you are greeted by the island staff with a traditional Maheu energy drink made from maize meal and are then led to the very edge of the Falls on the east of the island overlooking Horseshoe and Rainbow Falls. In 2005 a commemorative plaque was erected here to commemorate 150 years since Livingstone‘s first arrival.

The guides then lead you to the west of the island overlooking Main Falls. Wow… what a magnificent view, as the main torrent of water gushes over the basalt precipice. It’s like no other view of the Falls and gives a completely different perspective to the views one gets from the path through the Rainforest on the other side of the canyon.

During the morning trips, if it’s sunny day, the rainbows are just incredible. It’s truly jaw dropping and honestly I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Now is your chance to jump into the Devils Pool if you wish, this is not compulsory and is only if you feel comfortable. Stripping down to your swimming costume (they have spares just in case you thought you weren’t brave enough, but have now suddenly worked up the courage) your guide leads you and explains your route.

You swim slightly upstream in a very slow current, being a strong swimmer is not a prerequisite. A safety rope is also in place as an added precaution. You then climb out on another rocky outcrop close to the edge of the Falls and the Devils Pool.

The Devils Pool itself is a deep natural pool that has been created by thousands of years of erosion, but what is unique about it is that there is a rock ledge on the lip of the Falls, where the water is only a few centimetres deep. This natural barrier is what allows you to jump into the deep pool but not get swept over the edge.

You can now lie on this rock lip at the edge of the Devils Pool and look right into the 103m chasm of the Falls, with huge torrents of water flowing just meters away. The guides will take photos and video of you with your camera if you have one.

The Devils Pool has a real adrenaline high and people who have experienced it Love it!. Once back on Livingstone Island you will be treated to either breakfast, lunch or snacks depending the the time of day you have gone.

Your boat then whisks you back to the mainland at the launch site. A Magical experience

Upper Zambezi Cannoeing

Victoria Falls Canoeing

Excellent game and bird watching on the Zambezi River whilst feasting on the beautiful scenery…

Victoria Falls
canoeing above the Falls on the upper Zambezi is the perfect activity for those who not only want to see the abundant bird and animal life but also want to experience the peace, tranquillity and beauty of the Zambezi River. The river is a kilometre wide and in places a bit more. It has an indescribable beauty with crystal clear waters and a myriad of islands and channels to explore

No Previous Experience Needed…

The birdlife is phenomenal with rare beauties like the African Finfoot, half collared kingfisher, palm thrush and numerous others species. Elephants and other game is often encountered on the Zimbabwean side so whether you are an avid bird watcher, wildlife fan or just want to experience the peace and tranquillity of this mighty river, I would highly recommend an “Above the Victoria Falls Canoeing Trip” it’s a great way to get to know this outstanding location.

Sections of the upper river do have some white water rapids, nothing like the rapids below the falls but enough to get your heart racing.

Cameras and videos can be taken on the trip with the guides keeping them safe in a waterproof bag in the wetter sections.

On these canoe trips, guests paddle their own canoes/kayaks following their experienced canoe guide. You don’t have to be a canoeing expert and a life-jacket will be provided.

The trip starts with pickup from your hotel or lodge at around 7am and an early morning game drive through the Zambezi National Park. At the put-in point, a continental breakfast is served while your canoe guide gives you a safety briefing, instructions and information on the condition of the river and what to expect.

After breakfast and the briefing, it’s time to experience the Zambezi River. Today’s trip explores 18kms of this amazing river, it’s surroundings and channels whilst game viewing and bird watching.

A tasty lunch will be served either by the river’s edge or on an island and then continue further down the river. At the take-out point at the end of the canoe trip, refreshments will be served and an open game drive vehicle will transfer you out of the Zambezi National Park and to your accommodation at around 14h30.

Canoe Float

Canoe floats are shorter trips exploring heavily wooded islands and the channels that run through them. A picnic and drinks are served on one of the islands during the trip, which lasts about 3 hours including the return road transfers.

Tandem Gorge Swing

Activity Description

The Wild Horizons Tandem Gorge Swing is a exhilarating and spine tingling experience. Dive into the wide-open air as you plunge into the mouth of the Batoka gorge, Victoria Falls. Scream as you break free of the fear and nervousness you felt before you threw yourself off the platform. It is amazing how the things that make our hearts skip a beat, are the things that make us feel most alive. If you have done the gorge swing, you know this better than anyone. The moment you find yourself on a wooden platform that peers into the chasm of the gorge, is the moment you realize that fear doesn’t shut you down, it wakes you up. The gorge swing is a 70 meter free fall that ends with an massive swing 120 meters above the powerful Zambezi river. The Tandem Gorge Swing will literally leave you breathless as you soar through the air, leaving your fears and nervousness on the platform far behind you. A pulley will slowly pull you back to reality, giving you time to wrap your head around the invigorating experience while you appreciate the immense beauty of the gorge, the river, and the life within it. Though the fall lasts three seconds, the memory of falling through open African air lasts a lifetime.

Victoria Falls Bunjee Jumping

Jumping 111 meters off the Victoria Falls Bridge has to be one of the most challenging, terrifying, crazy things to do. I have not built up the courage yet but from all accounts…. It’s a must do.

Some say it’s the best Bungee in the world…it’s not the highest, that honour goes to Macau Tower in China which is an incredible 233m. Maybe it is because of the backdrop of the Victoria Falls or maybe just the fact that you are free falling down towards the mighty Zambezi. Whatever it is, it is a massive adrenaline rush!!

Even famous people such as Ewan McGregor and Will Smith have taken the plunge.

There is only one company that operates the Bungee Jump on the Victoria Falls Bridge. They are affiliated to Shearwater in Zimbabwe.

First timers normally do a standard head first dive, but the more experienced try all sorts of flips, backflips and inward tucks, some even with a bicycle or kayak.

Pre-booked and paid bungee jumpers are entitled to a full refund up until they sign the indemnity form on the bridge and start to strap up, you are then past the point of no return.

Facts about the Victoria Falls Bungee Jumping

  • It is 111 meters high.
    • Operates off Victoria Falls Bridge the border crossing point between Zimbabweand Zambia.
    • Minimum age14 years.
    • Minimum weight of 40 kg, a maximum weight of 120 kg.
    • Passports are required by clients to access the bridge. You must notify passport control that you are going to Bungee. This does not entitle you to enter the country on the other side.
    • Jumps operate from 9 am to 5 pm every day – (10 am March to June.), with a lunch time break between 1pm and 2pm
    • Ankle and body harnesses are attached separately to clients.
    • After jumping clients are winched back onto the bridge.
    • Photographs and video are taken of each jumper and are available for purchase.
    • Videos cost US$55 each, and photos are US$30. A combination of video and photos is packaged at US$65.
    • Transfers are not included with this activity, so clients are expected to make their own way there, or make use of the Bridge Bus which leaves the Shearwater Cafe at 10 am and 2 pm daily. You can book your seat when you book your bungee.
    • During the rainy season (November to May), there may be interruptions in jumps because the cords have to be kept dry.

Gorge Swing

Activity Description

The Wild Horizons Gorge Swing is a thrilling and mind-blowing experience. Leap into the wide-open air as you plunge into the mouth of the Batoka gorge, Victoria Falls. Scream as you break free of the fear and trepidation you felt before you threw yourself off the platform. Zero Gravity!

Imagine swinging in a child’s swing in the playground…now imagine a giant swing 95 m long and 120 m high above water…now imagine a 70 m free fall before you begin swinging. Stop imagining and come and try it out! Our high wire is suspended across the gorge at a point where the width is 316 m and 120 m deep. A harness is attached to the jumper and then the jumping ropes, the other end of which is pivoted to the middle of the cable. The jumper leaps off the edge of the gorge, free falling about 70 m before going into a 95 m long pendulum-type swing.
